The dissertation thesis submitted by Michal Mrnka is focused on higher-order mode dielectric antennas and antenna arrays. In the thesis, several original ideas were presented. Personally, I highly appreciate: - Methodology of grouping dielectric antenna elements to arrays. Michal paid attention to mutual coupling of elements and methods to suppress this coupling. - Exploitation of perforated dielectrics in the design of dielectric antennas. Up to now, perforated dielectrics were considered being isotropic. Michal described anisotropies of such structures in a complex way for the first time (according to my knowledge). Obviously, the dissertation thesis is original in several aspects. This fact can be proven: - By 9 records on Web of Science including 4 journal articles and 5 conference papers. Among journal publications, IEEE and IET periodicals prevail. The paper published in IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters was cited three times. - By an active participation in research projects funded by Czech Science Foundation, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Ministry of Education. In frame of COST Action IC1301 Wireless Power Transfer for Sustainable Electronics, Michal actively cooperated with Graz University of Technology and Technical University of Kosice (short-term scientific missions at both universities). Michal was also highly engaged in educational activities at the university: - He supervised 7 bachelor and diploma thesis focused on dielectric antennas, radio-frequency harvesters and wireless energy transfer. - He contributed to teaching and updating laboratory and computer exercises in several courses oriented to applied electromagnetics. Obviously, Michal meets all usual requirements on a PhD candidate. I therefore fully recommend PhD thesis authored by Michal to be defended.
