The dissertation thesis submitted by Miroslav Cupal is focused on the integration of high-frequency electronics into textile substrates. In the thesis, several original ideas are presented. Personally, I highly appreciate: - The design procedure for reconfigurable textile-integrated power dividers. Miroslav paid attention to a proper selection of PIN diodes, their optimal location and integration into a three-dimensional knitted textile. - The design procedure for circularly polarized textile-integrated antennas. Miroslav designed a slot antenna excited by a textile integrated waveguide. The antenna was optimized for the ISM band 5.8 GHz and re-designed for the ISM band 24 GHz. That way, frequency limits of textile-integrated electronics were demonstrated. The dissertation thesis is original in several aspects. This fact can be proven: - By 12 records on Web of Science including 10 conference papers and 2 journal articles (IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation, and J. Wiley and Sons). The paper published in IET was cited four times. - By an active participation in research projects funded by Ministry of Industry and Trade. The projects cover a common research with the producer of three-dimensional knitted fabrics SINTEX. Outputs of Miroslav’s research are of a high practical impact: - Developed design procedures can be used for the fabrication of multi-functional textile layers for vehicular applications (upholstery, textile covers of seats) and medical ones (covers of mattresses). - The procedures can be applied in field of wearable electronics (monitoring of life functions, remote care for elderly people, etc.). Miroslav was also highly engaged in educational activities at the university: - He supervised 4 bachelor and diploma thesis focused on vehicular antennas, textile-integrated antennas and wearable ones. - He contributed to teaching and updating laboratory and computer exercises in several courses oriented to applied electromagnetics. According to my opinion, Miroslav Cupal meets all usual requirements on a PhD candidate. I therefore fully recommend PhD thesis authored by Miroslav to be defended.
